B.C. (Before College)
(Read from the bottom up; it will make more sense.)
Des Moines (IA) North High [solidified a social conscience; supported McCarthy; good-bye B-ball]Academic Career
Ottumwa (IA) High [biology, geometry & more B-ball; went through an A. Rand period -- who doesn't?]Fort Madison (IA) Junior High [discovered public libraries; saw up-close racial discrimination; lots of B-ball]
Macomb (IL) Edison Junior High [flunked the Mississippi literacy test; so did everyone else in 9th grade]
Cedar Rapids (IA) Roosevelt Junior High [soc. studies & economics were interesting; JHS football & wrestling]Cedar Rapids (IA) Fillmore Elementary [summer recreation programs gave life purpose]
Iowa City (IA) Henry Sabin Elementary [JD period; ran around UI campus w/o knowing what it was!]
West Branch (IA) Elementary [Hoover's birthplace; noticed social class; grilled chess never tasted so good!]
Clear Lake (IA) Elementary [lucky I didn't drown many times on the melting ice; played ball in the ballroom lot]
Boone (IA) Elementary [organized football, only one team 1st-8th grades; we were tackling dummies!]
Ward's Spring (MN) School [1-room school house, 12 grades, 10 students, 1 teacher, only 2nd grader]
Mason City (IA) Washington Elementary [watched Sputnik; grew snapdragons; loved the Milw. Braves]
Let's Hear It for Public Education. I Can't Complain.
"What you have not absorbed by the time you reach
the age of eighteen you will never absorb. It is finished.
You will be able to develop what you have absorbed.
You will be able to make something or nothing at all of it,
but your time for absorption is over and for the rest of your
life you will be branded by your childhood."Belgian novelist Georges Simenon
