My work focuses on the interactions of symbolic and material dimensions of power, identity and space. This encompasses two broad but interlocking foci. On one hand, I am interested in the micro-politics of urban public space. On the other, I am interested in the larger scale aspects of state territoriality. At the same time, I am interested in how different kinds of spatial media—from communications, to law, to the conduits that facilitate the mobility of people and things—serve to collapse the simple binaries that oppose local and global, state and society. The focus on public space and on state territoriality thus reflects an integrated theoretical and conceptual project that seeks to understand how power is spatialized and unsettled in politically, socially, and geographically uneven ways.
