This manual is best viewed at 800x600 screen resolution

Introduction

The projectors in Benton hall are effectively very large monitors.  You can connect them to almost any computer and operate them with  little or no end user adjustment.  What follows is a step by step procedure that will assist you in the successful operation of these units.  WARNING - It is very easy, once you get the unit working and are happily teaching, to forget, in the turmoil at the end of class, to turn it off.  THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE.  IF THE UNIT IS LEFT ON FOR LONG PERIODS OF TIME, IT MAY BE DAMAGED.

The layout of the unit is as shown.  You can operate the unit by pointing the remote either  directly at the remote receiver on the ceiling or at the screen.

 Setting up the Laptop Computer

Lay the Laptop Computer case on a flat surface and unzip the case.  Lay the top of the case over, exposing the computer.  Note the orientation of the computer in the case.

Remove the Laptop from the case by separating the Velcro straps, grabbing the end of the straps (as indicated) as indicated and pull them toward the top of the case, and laying them away from the computer.  Set the computer on a flat surface.

Locate the external video port on the back of the Laptop (as indicated)
Using the video cable as shown on the left,
Attach either end to the Laptop Video port as shown.  (as indicated)   Tighten the screw connectors.
Next, locate the Laptop Display latches on either side of the computer as shown in the photo on the left.  Slide them toward you as you simultaneously lift the display up and away from you. (as indicated)
Remove the power supply and ac cord from the large pocket on the top front of the case.  (as indicated)
.

Plug the ac cord into the end of the power supply opposite the power indicator lite, and then plug the other into the nearest ac outlet.  (as indicated)

Locate the Power Inlet on the right side of the computer.  (as indicated)
Next, plug the notebook power cord into the notebook power input jack.   Note that there is a small ear (a) on the power cord to facilitate gripping the cord end.  This ear should be oriented upward (b), as you gently push the power connector inward (c). Do not force this connection.  If it does not go in easily check the orientation of the plug.
Next, you will find located in the front of the class room a projector  interface box -- shown on the right
Attach the remaining end of the video cable to the video jack located on the projector interface, paying attention to the shape of the end of the cable...  (as indicated)
...as shown in the photo on the right.  (as indicated)

Note: Complete the next steps only if you are connecting to the network

Locate the network cables in the narrow pocket on the front of the laptop case.  (as indicated)
These are the network cables.  The shorter cable connects directly to the laptop computer.  The longer cable interfaces between the large end of the short cable and the network jack on the wall.  (as indicated)
The Ethernet wall jack is located in a data outlet group as shown on the right.  This is located in the same vicinity as the projector interface.  Notice the orientation of the jack, allowing the cable end to plugged into the jack only one way.  The jack that you plug into is labeled D1and is generally colored dark orange...  (as indicated)
... the completed connection appears as on the left.  (as indicated)
Next, Connect the Ethernet cable to the 3Com Adapter cable.  (as indicated)
And now connect the 3Com Adapter cable to the computer port on the right side near the power cable with the blue 3Com logo facing upward...
