says "We've spawned a new race here - rougher, simpler, more
violent, more enterprising, and less refined." So while the set
has touches of Independence Hall, the walls are made of lath, lending
it a rough, less refined appearance. It also allows light through
the walls, creating streaks of red, white and blue light for Adams'
"I see fireworks" aria.

chamber tracked upstage and was hidden by a panel of lath for the non-chamber
scenes. Small pieces flew and tracked in left and right to represent
the other locations.
