About the Design

Some time after I started work at rhe University of Kentucky, I entered into a conversation between Russell Henderson and Nelson Fields about the plan they had to someday do Earnest set in the 50's. There social conservatism that gave Wilde the context to write was there in the early 50's. The clothing was just as constrictive. And social status was just as important.

"Someday" became a reality when we decided to put the show on the season schedule. I was excited at the chance to contribute and refine the ideas (as a fan of mid-century kitsch).

The play was produced on the Guignol stage at the University of Kentucky, a 32' x 16' proscenium. The budget was approximately $5,000. Scenery is built under the supervision of a faculty technical director with student labor. I served as charge artist and prop master.
