Research Interests: Our group is working on a variety of research projects, ranging from groundwater contamination and bioremediation (heavy metal Tc in particular), clay mineral-microbe interactions, and life in extreme environments (deep subsurface, deep-oceans, hypersaline lakes and dry deserts). We employ a suite of analytical tools, including X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM), molecular microbiology (phylogenetic analysis, FISH, qPCR, RT-qPCR), and cultivation. Dr. Dong has published ~60 research papers in various journals, has served as conveners for national meetings and associate editor for Clays & Clay Minerals and Geomicrobiology Journal. He has served on NASA, DOE, and NSF proposal review panels.
