Micro and nano-devices for magnetoresistance studies

Research Overview

Magneto-transport in micro- and nano-devices

Two important developments in the field of magnetism in recent years were the discovery of the GMR effect and ferromagnetism in Mn-doped III-V semiconductors. Those and other developments in magnetism lead to the birth of a new field called spintronics.

The GMR effect has been extensively studied and was quickly utilized in the computer read head industry.

Even though the ferromagnetic semiconductor GaMnAs has been the focus of intense research, much has to be done to explore the full potential of this novel material.

Te main focus of our research is the fabrication and characterization of GMR and other magnetic devices based on the ferromagnetic semiconductor GaMnAs. The group uses both photo- and electron beam lithography to fabricate the micro- and nano-devices that we study. Magneto-transport studies are then done at cryogenic temperatures using our helium close cycle system.

We are currently building a class 1000 cleanroom facility to be housed in the group’s lab in room 37 of Culler Hall.
