Contents for ENG / FST 350.A
Introduction to science-fiction cinema, attempting a definition of the genre, "from (George) Méliés to The Matrix." We usually cover movies of the silent era (e.g., Metropolis, The Golem) to the 1950's (e.g., Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Forbidden Planet into the 1990's. The interconnections among SF, Horror, and Fantasy will be examined carefully. Emphases have included the esthetics of the science fiction film, the theme of "the human/machine interface," issues of gender, and 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Matrix as central modern and postmodern SF films. Other films have included: Alien, Aliens, Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Blade Runner, Clockwork Orange, Dr. Strangelove, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, Brazil, and Twelve Monkeys.
