ENG/FST 350A will stress, so to speak, "An American Filmmaker in London": the SF of Stanley Kubrick (Doctor Strangelove, 2001, A Clockwork Orange) and the SF and maybe related materials of Terry Gilliam (definitely Brazil and 12 Monkeys [along with "La Jettee"], and we'll at least examine the script for The Fisher King). I also want to look at the work of Cameron and Hurd (Aliens, Terminator, Terminator 2). We will see THX-1138, but beyond that I'll give the class their choice for class study and group reports among Lucas's and Spielberg's SF, Cronenberg (The Fly, perhaps), and Ridley Scott (maybe Blade Runner [along with Lang's Metropolis], or Alien [with Nosferatu]). We will get into issues of Modernism/Postmodernism, visions of oppression, Kubrick on aggression and Gilliam on Romance-which will get us into some feminist issues.
