Frequently asked questions
Question. Why should I take another course in Mathematics
or Statistics?
Answer. There are many reasons including
lCourses in Mathematics and Statistics look good on your record (if you do well in them).
lWith each Mathematics or Statistics course, your overall mathematical skills will improve.
lWith each Mathematics or Statistics course, your ability to understand the mathematical and statistical aspects of other fields of study will grow stronger.
lBy continuing in the next Mathematics or Statistics course, and not taking time off, you can stay on schedule to meet the math/stat requirements of all programs on campus and this keeps your options open for majors, minors, and thematic sequences.
lYou can work toward a Thematic Sequence.
lWe live in an
age in which it is often said that information is power. But the world of
information is driven by sophisticated mathematical ideas, whether it be the
abstract algebra and number theory behind cryptography, or the linear algebra
behind both error-correcting codes and the search engine efficiency of Google,
or the statistical underpinnings of the way missing census data is extrapolated
from available data. These days, even the stock market involves sophisticated
mathematics.
lMany
professionals, whether they be in Marketing or Medicine, find themselves having
to make accurate predictions from statistical data. Each extra statistics
course you take increases your employability.
lOnce you get
beyond calculus and linear algebra, math/stat courses begin to branch out more
instead of building upon previous courses. So, you might be missing out on a
kind of math or stat that you didn't know you liked because you haven't
experienced it yet.
lYou can work toward a minor in Mathematics, Statistics, or Operations Research Methods.
lYou can work toward a major (or second major) in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.
l Mathematics and Statistics Majors are in Demand.
