Dear Temperance Tammy,
I am ashamed to say that my husband loves his drink. I, on the other hand, have chosen a life of abstinence from alcoholic beverages. In fact, I want to join the WCTU and help their crusade of closing the saloons. My problem is that my husband has forbidden me to join and would be furious if I did. How can I convince him that temperance is the right way and gain his understanding so I may join in the cause?
Sincerely,
Ashamed in Oxford
Dear Ashamed in Oxford,
Just join us. Your husband may get mad but not many women in the union have their husbands’ support. Plus, if you take the risk it may show your husband how serious and dedicated you are to the temperance cause. When he sees how important this is to you, hopefully, he will come around. He may not join in himself but he may not try to stand in your way anymore either. We have a meeting tomorrow morning at 8 am at the Methodist Church, then we begin another day of protest on High Street. Hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Temperance Tammy
