Paper III
You have two options for Paper III. You may answer one of the two
questions in Section A (with or without using outside sources, your
choice) or you may create an annotated bibliography for one of the
authors in Section B. If you are interested in the annotated
bibliography, see Cornell University Library's excellent
guidelines.
Section A
Answer one of the
following questions in an organized, well-developed and well-supported
essay.
You should have a discernible thesis, quotes from the text(s), and
coherent
paragraphs (should any of these requirements worry you, please come see
me in
office hours).
1) How do exiles "invent" their homeland? What are some of the elements
that appear in the invented homeland (look for patterns and
repetitions) in exile literature? You may use any of the authors we
have read this semester as long as they fit your definition of "exile,"
which you should make explicit in your introduction.
2) How is the phrase "Geography is destiny" true or not true for
immigrant or exile writers? Use at least three of the authors we have
studied this semester.
Length: 5-7 pages (NB: This paper is a bit longer than
previous papers.)
Section B
Although the guidelines at Cornell suggest 150 words per entry, you may
have as few as 50-100 for shorter articles. You will not be able to
read all the books or articles available, but you should at least skim
(for understanding) the sources you choose to annotate.
You may choose from the following authors for your annotated
bibliography:
Sandra Cisneros
Julia Alvarez
Rudolfo Anaya
Tomás Rivera
Gloria Anzaldúa
Luis Valdez
Length: 8-12 annotations (with as many
citations as you can find)
Due: April 5, 2004 (Week 12)
