Some Differences between High School and College

Over the course of several assignments in ENG 111: College Composition, many of my students have written about the differences between high school and college expectations and experiences. They routinely noted that college professors expect more of them than their high school teachers did and that they feel more responsible for their education than they did in high school.

Here are some of the differences that they observed:

In college, students are expected to be responsible for all facets of their education.

College professors expect students to be responsible for assignments and deadlines and do not continually remind students about upcoming dates.

College professors generally do not take late assignments without penalty.

College professors do not give students time in class to complete readings and assignments.

College professors expect students to come to their office hours or make an appointment if they are having difficulty with course material.
