If you are looking for a meaningful master's degree; if you want an in-depth look at strands from the NCTM Principles and Standards in School Mathematics; or if you just want to enhance your mathematical and pedagogical expertise, Miami University has a summer program for you.

Faculty members at Miami are committed to the improvement of mathematics learning for K-12 students. Both the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Teacher Education offer courses and degree programs that focus on effective classroom teaching. This includes mathematics content, applications of technology, curriculum, and assessment.

The courses listed here are part of a three-year schedule that can lead to the M.A.T. degree in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. They can also be taken on an individual basis for graduate credit.

MASTER OF ARTS IN TEACHING SUMMER DEGREE PROGRAM

OBJECTIVES

• To increase teachers' mathematical knowledge and ability to solve problems and reason mathematically.
• To develop teachers' awareness of applications and newly important topics in mathematics and statistics.
• To improve teachers' ability to utilize technology in mathematical problem solving and teaching mathematics.

REQUIREMENTS

• The candidate must already be certified to teach mathematics;
• 30 semester hours are required, including:

MTH 604 (3 hrs.) Discrete Mathematics for Secondary School Teachers
MTH 605 (3 hrs.) Calculus for Secondary School Teachers
MTH 606 (3 hrs.) Geometry for Secondary School Teachers
MTH 607 (3 hrs.) Algebra for Secondary School Teachers
MTH 508 (3 hrs.) Mathematical Problem Solving with Technology
STA 609 (3 hrs.) Probability & Statistics for Secondary School Teachers

Two courses (6 hrs.) in mathematics education (EDT).
Two electives (6 hrs.) selected to improve the candidate's ability to teach mathematics.

• All courses must be approved in advance by the candidate's advisor.
• Candidates must pass both written and oral comprehensive exams.

ALBERTA WOLFE FELLOWSHIPS

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is able to assist several mathematics teachers each summer with Alberta Wolfe Graduate Fellowships in Mathematics Education. Applicants must be candidates for a M.A.T. degree in the department and must enroll for at least 6 hours of approved summer courses that will count toward this degree. They must also be certified to teach secondary school mathematics and have at least one year of full-time mathematics teaching experience.

Alberta Wolfe Fellowships in 2008 are expected to be at least $1800. The fellowship typically pays for the remaining tuition costs of summer classes after students receive the TEAM scholarship (http://www.units.muohio.edu/eap/TeamScholarship/) offered solely to Ohio K-12 teachers in the state of Ohio.  In addition, for the summer of 2008 Wolfe Fellows will be provided with a $300 travel stipend to defray the costs to attend summer  classes  in  Oxford. Priority consideration will be given to applications that are received by April 28, 2008.
