One of the ways Dr. Thomas Klak at Miami University puts civic engagement and sustainability into practice is through the Dominica Project.

In this project, he combines research and scholarship with student projects, community-level international partnerships and an annual on-site course. All efforts are aimed to support sustainable living and development on the Caribbean island of Dominica.Students in the Dominica course

The students on the trip meet with farmers and island officials. They also visit sites on the island including a school, a banana farm and take a daylong hike to the boiling lake. The group's activities also include volunteer work at farms, including planting a corn field and helping with the banana harvest.

The plight of the banana farmers

In Dominica and in neighboring St Lucia, the program's main focus has been the plight of banana farmers, whose livelihoods have been devastated by recent changes in international trade policies. The program seek to understand how banana farmers are coping with higher input costs, lower prices, and smaller export markets. Through this, they hope to contribute positively to the situation by highlighting and supporting sustainable development initiative, such as flower sales and gardening.
