Descendants of Michael KeelyGeneration No. 11. MICHAEL1 KEELY was born 1695 in Wurtemburg, Germany, and died in Penn.. He married UNKNOWN in Wuertemberg, Germany. Notes for MICHAEL KEELY: The Keely name showed many variations before it reached its present form. The most common are: Kuhle, Kuhly, Keele, Keeley, & Keely. The correct German spelling seems to be Kiele. (Also seen as Kiehle in some references.) A tradition handed down by Michael & Valentine Keely's
family indicated that the Kiele family lived in the Palatinate
and that a certain queen (presume Queen Anne) of England conceived
a plan of importing some of the more phlegmatic young Germans
into Ireland for the purpose of rearing children which would
be more tractable (easily managed, docile, yielding, etc.) than
those descending from unions of only Irish. (The Queen wanted
a more stable population that could be easily controlled by England.)
On 24 Aug, 1728, the three brothers arrived on the ship, Mortenhouse. Michael presumably left and returned again on the ship Chesterfield (from Wurtemburg to Philadelphia), on 14 Sep 1749, with his son Sebastian, Sebastian's wife and their two children, John & Maria. Sebastian and his wife both died of ship's fever within ten
days after landing. John (almost 7 years old) and his sister,
Maria, were left in the care of this grandfather (Michael). |
Generation No. 22. SEBASTIAN2 KEELY (MICHAEL1) was born 1720 in Wurtemburg, Germany, and died September 1749 in Philadelphia, PA. He married UNKNOWN in Wurtemberg, Germany. Notes for SEBASTIAN KEELY:
Notes for MARIA KEELY: 3. ii. JOHN KEELY, b. October 01, 1742, Wurtemburg, Germany; d. April 22, 1818, Indian Creek, Reily Twp. OH. |
Generation No. 33. JOHN3 KEELY (SEBASTIAN2, MICHAEL1) was born October 01, 1742 in Wurtemburg, Germany, and died April 22, 1818 in Indian Creek, Reily Twp. OH. He married (1) ANNA MARIA BARBARA SMELLEN April 22, 1766 in Chester Co., PA. She was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, and died in 1774. He married (2) SUSAN SMELLAN 1777 in Chester Co., PA. She was born in Wurtemburg, Germany, and died 1832 in Shelbyville, IN (near). Notes for JOHN KEELY: Sebastian and his wife both died of ship's fever within ten days after landing. John (almost 7 years old) and his sister, Maria, were left in the care of this grandfather (Michael). He was probably sent to Chester county to the family of his father's cousin, Mathias (son of Valentine). He grew up, married and resided there. John fought in the Revolutionary War, taking part in the battle of the Brandywine, which was fought in the immediate vicinity. He served as private in Capt. James Denny's company, 1st battalion, Chester County, Pennsylvania militia. (DAR entry 146606 - Mrs. Josephine Davis Grove. Also #136173.) He spent the early part of his life in Chester county, PA where he married Anna Maria Barbara Smellen (sic). The record of this marriage was entered by John in his family Bible. His first wife died between 1774 and 1776, and he married second, about 1777, Susan Smellen, sister to his first wife. Susan Smellen hesitated very seriously before consenting to become the successor to her sister, but one warm summer day, worn out caring for the two youngest children of her sister who were in the cradle by her side, she dropped asleep and her sister appeared to her in a vision urging her to marry John and assuring her that the act met with her fullest approval and coincided with her wishers for her children's happiness. This dream made a profound impression on Susan's mind and shortly thereafter the marriage occurred. She is said to have been a very superior woman and lived to an advanced age, dying in 1832, at the residence of her son Samuel, near Shelbyville, Indiana, aged about 90. John removed from Chester county to Dauphin county before 1790, and afterwards to Westmoreland county. He was a miller, but eventually to Cincinnati and then to Oxford, Ohio, where he died on Indian Creek, April 11, 1818. One of his wives is said to have been "The Widow McCleary." If this is correct it was probably Susan, as the record of the first marriage is silent on this point, while no Bible entry was made of the second marriage." Generation No. 44. JOHN JACOB4 KEELY (JOHN3, SEBASTIAN2, MICHAEL1)1 was born February 01, 1767 in Chester Co., PA unconfirmed. He married UNKNOWN. Notes for JOHN JACOB KEELY: Please note from Linda Peetz Kramer: I believe the above statement is not quite accurate. John Jacob's grandfather was Sebastian, who died in Philadelphia in 1749. I believe the "grandfather" referenced is actually his father, John. I also believe that "his uncle" is actually his 1/2 brother/cousin...John Jacob's mother and John's mother were sisters. More About JOHN JACOB KEELY: 5. MICHAEL4 KEELY (JOHN3, SEBASTIAN2, MICHAEL1) was born December
13, 1777. He married JANE VOORIS. Notes for MARY ANN KEELY: iv. WASHINGTON KEELY, m. MARY BOGLE. Notes for JULIA KEELY: 6. She was born August 07, 1787 in Northumberland Co., PA, and died April 06, 1861 in Oxford, OH. Notes for JOHN KEELY: Notes about John Jacob, John's 1/2 brother/cousin below: "Resided in Penn. Nothing has been learned of his family except that he had a son John and other children. John removed to Cincinnati about 1812, where his grandfather, John, and his uncle, John, were then living, and to distinguish him from these he was given the sobriquet of "Red House John Keely" from the color of his house." From: "Notes & Queries Relating chiefly to Interior Pennsylvania, Annual Volume, 1897" by Egle. Please note from Linda Peetz Kramer: I believe this statement is not quite accurate. John Jacob's grandfather was Sebastian, who died in Philadelphia in 1749. I believe the "grandfather" referenced is actually his father, John. I also believe that "his uncle" is actually his 1/2 brother/cousin...John Jacob's mother and John's mother were sisters. From the United Methodist Church of Oxford, Ohio about the history of the church: "A violent wind storm swept the village in June 1819, felling the nearly finished church. It was a near fatal blow in the hopes of the local Methodism. John Keely, a stonemason, originally from Cincinnati, tirelessly worked to rebuild the church. He mortgaged everything he owned to pay the costs, losing his property. But he stayed for many years afterward, and his sons, George Washington Keely and John Wesley Keely became dentists of this area. John Wesley Keely was also an ordained preacher. George Keely "father of Oxford trees" set out elms and maples on the village green and along Oxford streets. The Keely homestead still stands on West Central. Keely descendants include Mrs. Mary Beeks and Dr. Frank C. Beeks of Oxford." This publication is found in the Smith Room, Lane Library, Oxford, OH.
