ITL 262.1: CINEMA ITALIANO

This is a one-credit course taught in Italian which complements the English-taught ITL 262: ITALIAN CINEMA (3 credits). Students who wish to have ITL 262 count toward a minor in Italian must concurrently enroll in 262.1, thus earning 4 credits altogether toward the Italian minor.

Fifty minutes per week will be devoted to discussing Italian movies and directors and pertinent readings. All readings and discussions will be in Italian.

PARTICIPATION: Active participation in the course is essential, and is worth 100 points (best 25 scores at 4 points per lesson: 4=excellent, 3=good, 2=adequate, 1=less than satisfactory, 0=absent).

READING/WRITING/ORAL ASSIGNMENTS: Each week there will be an article or excerpts from a longer study by Italian film scholars to read. The entire class will read each assignment before the Tuesday. One student will lead class discussion on its content, pointing out and critiquing its main points and soliciting reactions from the other students. The student will also write a 100-200-word summary (in Italian) of the reading to hand in. Each student will be required to do two during the semester. Each will be worth 25 points. On Thursdays we will discuss the film screened for that week. Again one student will lead the discussion, articulating issues presented in the film and soliciting responses from the other students. The student will also submit a 100-200-word review of the movie (in Italian). Each student will be required to do two films, each worth 25 points.

TESTS: There will be weekly quizzes during the semester, worth 10 points each, on the week's film and reading assignment. The 10 best grades will be tabulated; the 2 worst scores, or missed quizzes, will be dropped. There will be a mid-term exam (100 points) and a comprehensive final exam (200 points).

GRADING: The standard breakdown: 93-100%=A, 90-92%=A-; 87-89%=B+, 83-86%=B, 80-82%=B-, etc., based on the following categories: Class participation--100 points; 4 written summaries/oral presentations--100 points; Quizzes (10 best of 12)--100 points; Mid-term test--100 points; Final exam--200 points; TOTAL--600 POINTS
