This is a one-credit course taught in Italian. It complements ITL 401: DANTE'S DIVINE COMEDY, which is taught in English with a bilingual text. Students who wish to have 401 count toward a minor in Italian must concurrently enroll in 401.0, thus earning 4 credits altogether toward the Italian minor.
One academic hour per week will be devoted to reading and discussing the Commedia in Italian, paying
particular attention to its language and its prosody, and representative critical studies and essays by Italian Dante
scholars.
READING ASSIGNMENTS: In addition to the readings from the Commedia, each week there will be an article or
book excerpt(s) pertaining to a character or some aspect of the Commedia (photocopies available from Oxford Copy
Shop).
WRITING ASSIGNMENTS: Pick four (4) of the scholarly articles and write a one-page summary of each (c. 200-300
words, in Italian, due at indicated intervals). You will be graded for the accuracy of the summary as well as the
language (grammar, syntax, style).
PARTICIPATION: Active participation in the course is crucial. Each student should take careful notes on the
readings and should prepare a list of questions either about the Commedia or about the scholarly article.
QUIZZES AND TESTS: There will be weekly quizzes, worth 10 points each. The 10 best grades will be tabulated;
the worst 2 scores, or missed quizzes will be dropped. There will be two mid-term exams, worth 50 points each, and
a comprehensive final exam, Thursday, May 6, 7:30 AM (or take-home).
GRADING: The standard breakdown: 93%+=A; 90-92%=A-; 87-89%=B+; 83-86%=B; 80-82%=B-; 77-79%=C+; 73-76%=C; 70-72%=C-; 67-69%=D+; 63=66%=D; 60-62%=D-; based on the following categories:
