'Doc' Schroder made ill campers feel better By Rebecca Billman Cincinnati Enquirer - 5/9/2001 C. Richard "Doc" Schroder treat sick kids and just plain homesick kids at Fort Scott Camps in Harrison from 1950 to 1988, when he was medical director at the archdiocesan summer camp. The family practitioner also served at the Xavier University Student Health Clinic for 37 years, the former Longview State Hospital for 16 years, and, most recently, at the Oneida Baptist Institute in Oneida, Ky. Dr. Schroder died of congestive heart failure Saturday at St. Margaret Hall in Evanston. Formerly of Hyde Park, he was 90. He grew up in Pleasant Ridge and graduate from Xavier in 1932 and the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1936. He set up a family practice in Avondale in 1938. Dr. Schroder entered the Army in 1942, serving in Gen. Patton's 4th Armored Division until 1946. He was on the staff at Good Samaritan, St. Francis/St. George and Providence hospitals. And he was the recipient of many humanitarian awards, including the Good Samaritan Award and the Mission Award from the Diocese of Lexington, Ky. Dr. Schroder was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Survivors include: a sister, Susan Gruber of Finneytown; a brother, Louis E. Schroder of Hyde Park; and 17 nieces and nephews. Visitation is 3-5 p.m. today at Gilligan Funeral Home, 2926 Woodburn Ave. in East Walnut Hills. Mass of Christian burial follows at 6 p.m. at Nativity Church, 5935 Pandora Ave. in Pleasant Ridge. There will be a wake at 7:30 p.m. at Xavier's Cintas Center.
