Australia/New Zealand 2001 Page

These are some photos from my trip to Australia and New Zealand in July 2001. While in Australia, I visited New South Wales (Sydney), Victoria (Melbourne, Port Campbell National Park), the Northern Territory (Uluru, Kata Tjuta, Alice Springs), and Queensland (Cairns, Daintree Rainforest, Great Barrier Reef). In New Zealand, I visited the South Island (Christchurch, Dunedin, the Catlins).

Sydney Harbor Bridge and Opera House with Palm Trees.

Many of the Sydney suburbs have great beaches, including Bondi, a surfing mecca. About an hour later, I got completely soaked by the rainclouds you see behind me!

Downtown Sydney, at night in the fog, from Mrs. Macquarie's Point.

At the far southern end of Victoria is Port Campbell National Park along the Great Ocean Road, which features a stretch of the Pacific Ocean where sandstone columns jut out of the sea. This photo was taken from a helicopter trip that I took.

Uluru is a large monolith in the middle of Australia's Outback. It's a very sacred spot to the Aboriginal people (and no, I didn't climb Ayers Rock).

I visited the Outback during a very unusually wet period. Here, a tree stands in front of a cloud-shrouded Uluru along the Mutitjulu Walk.

A pretty spot at the Mala Walk watering hole, Uluru.

Snorkeling at the Great Barrier Reef, about 50 miles off shore of Queensland. Snorkeling the GBR was one of the most amazing things I've ever experienced in my life.

The Southern Alps from the air, South Island, New Zealand. At one moment, this was the view (with the Pacific Ocean to the east and the Tasman Sea to the west).

There are lots of scenes like this all throughout New Zealand. This was Akaroa Harbor, south of Christchurch, New Zealand.

In the Catlins (southern Otago, New Zealand), there are many hikes that lead to falls like this one, McLean's Falls.

Also in southern Otago, Nugget Point is a group of rock formations out in the Pacific near a lighthouse. On the rocks below, many seals are swimming and having fun. Penguins and seals are very common throughout the South Island.

A yawning seal, Allan's Beach, Otago Peninsula, near Dunedin, New Zealand. There were several seals just hanging out at this beach.
