Cooperative Lesson Plan
Summary Sam –GO Map
Grades 1-3
Goal: To have the children work in cooperative groups to read and summarize a story.
Abstract: The activity is set up to work in groups of four children and could be used with
1 book for the whole class or a different book for each group. The group will
work together to complete a chart map (GO map) that contains the characters,
setting, problem and solution of a story.
Materials:
Book with contains a problem and solution
Paper and art supplies
Sticker cards or something to split up the class into teams of four
Time: Depending on the length of the book, 45 min reading block usually is enough
time
Procedure:
1. Chose a book or books that has a problem/solution theme. There are many
books that will work. (Ex. Stellaluna by Janell Cannon)
2. Divide the class up into groups of four students. Sticker cards are an easy way
to split up groups. The cards need to have two stickers on an index card one
that will split them into groups (like a basketball sticker on four different
cards) and then a different sticker on each of the cards in the basketball group
( like a red smile, blue smile, yellow smile, and green smile) Have the
students pull a cards and divide up into teams.
3. Depending on your book choice or lesson, you can either read the story to the
whole class or give a book to each group. The students in the groups are
assigned to a section of the Go map (which looks like a triangle on top of a
circle) To monitor the students and make sure they do not do the same part of
the map every time, I usually assign the sections. Blue smile do the characters,
red do the setting, yellow do the problem and green do the solution.
4. The groups go through the map and talk about each section of the map as a
team. The team is responsible for making the map flow together. The problem and solution need to match and agreed upon. The team then needs to decide how they are going to present their information. They can do it as a poster, mobil, etc.
5. Each individual is then responsible for writing a complete sentence stating
their part of the map and a picture to go with it.
6. The team then has five minutes to regroup and go over their part of the map.
They then present their map to the class.
Cooperative Lesson Format
Positive Interdependence: This activity is a great project that promotes the
children to work together to successfully complete the activity as well as
depend on each other to finish the activity.
Individual Accountability: Children bring to the group their own ideas for the activity
and for the presentation. They individually write and draw their part of the GO
map.
Social Skills: Social skills are built and strengthened in this activity. They need to talk
and listen to each other and decide as a team what is best for the group.
Heterogeneous Grouping: This is done by the teacher in this activity. Sticker cards or
popsicle sticks are a great way to divide the groups.
Processing: This occurs when the group comes back together and discusses their part
before the prenentation.
Evaluation: This activity should be modeled and completed many times so that the
children are comfortable with the activity. An evaluation should be done on
the student working as a group and how well they worked within the group.
An evaluation could also be done on their individual parts of the map.
