Fairy Tale Cooperative Lesson

This fairy tale lesson was written for a second grade classroom.  The lesson should take about five days to complete.

Objective:  Students will experience four different fairy tales; Little Red Riding Hood, Three Little Pigs, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and Cinderella.

The students will learn that fairy tales have certain elements.  These elements are that events happen in threes, there is good and evil, good always wins, and some kind of magic occurs.

The students will practice retelling a story using details from the fairy tales.

Students will practice identifying the main idea of the story.

Students will compare and contrast the fairy tales with other stories or real life events.

Students will identify important vocabulary.

Students will use the pictures to help retell the fairy tales.

Materials:

Multiple copies of each fairy tale.

Activity sheets

Coloring utensils

Pencil

Folder

Procedure:

1.    Introduce fairy tales.  Give students a web to complete to assess their prior knowledge-what do you know about fairy tales?  Share answers.

2.    Divide students into groups.  Five students in each group.  There will be one high achieving academic student, two medium academic achieving students, and one low achieving academic student.  There will also be diversity in gender.  (Heterogenous grouping)

3.     Introduce each of the roles.

q      Awesome Artist

q      Word Wizard

q      Discussion Director

q      Cool Connector

q      Rock n’ Reteller

I will guide students through a discussion to discover fair ways to decide roles.  Make a list on the chalkboard.  (Social Skills)

4.     Students will find a quiet spot in the classroom to read the fairy tale with their groups.

5.     After they read the fairy tale, students will choose roles to play in the literature circle.  (Face to Face Interaction)

6.    Begin working in groups.  Students share ideas and guide each other through the literature circle.

7.    After each student completes their activity that corresponds with his/her role, the students in the literature circle will do a mini-presentation to share their final ideas on the fairy tale with in the group.  (Individual Accountability)

8.    Presentation-Literature circle will present their activities as a single project.  The classroom listeners will have to guess the fairy tale that the literature circle is describing.  (Positive Interdependence)

9.    Literature circle members will meet once more to discuss how the group worked together.  See group evaluation worksheet.  (Processing)

10. Students complete the group rewards.  Each member will assign a reward to each group member.  Fill out an example that fulfills that reward.  Present them to each other.

11. Finally, I will complete a rubric to assess each group members learning.  (Evaluation)
