Cooperative Lesson

Appropriate Level: 5th/6th grade

Goal: Use TGT (Teams-Games-Tournaments) method to study the content of the book The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe (Chapters 1-6) by C.S. Lewis.

Time: 1 week (5 class sessions)
teaching presentation: 2 days
team study: 2 days
tournament: 1 day
Group Size: whole class
4 students per study team
3 students per tournament team
Materials: (for teaching presentation and team study)
Enough individual copies of The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe for each student and teacher.
A dollhouse with a wardrobe inside.
world map
(for tournaments): 8 tables with at least 3 chairs each
one copy of the game sheet and answers for each table
one game score sheet for each table
numbered cards for each table (1 - 30)
Procedures:
Teaching Presentations (days 1 and 2)
objective: The learner will read and discuss chapters 1 - 4 in C.S. Lewis The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. (2 chapters each day)

group size: whole class

materials: individual book copies, a world map, dollhouse, and wardrobe model

instructions: The teacher displays the dollhouse with the wardrobe model inside to provide interest and focus. The class discusses what a wardrobe is and how it might relate to the story. The students also predict what the story might be about based on the title and front cover pictures.

The teacher displays the world map and points out the location of England in comparison with the United States. The story starts out in London, England and the class can discuss what they know about the country. The teacher can ask probing questions about the language spoken and the monarchy to get the students thinking along those lines.

The teacher and students will then begin reading Chapters 1and 2 together, stopping for questions and periodic discussions concerning the content. The same procedures will continue for day 2 as the class again assembles as a whole to read and discuss Chapters 3 and 4.

Team Study (days 3 and 4)

objectives:

The learner will read and discuss chapters 5 and 6 in C.S. Lewis The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe with their team. (day 3)

The learner will work with their team to answer questions from the worksheet provided.

group size: teams of 4 students

physical setting: Students will work together in groups of 4 either sitting at tables or on the floor around the classroom.

assigning students to teams: The teacher will assign students to teams based on a cross-section representation of the class. The teacher will take into account sex, ethnicity, and academic standing (based on class performance, not national norms) when choosing these groups. In assigning students to teams, balance the teams so that (a) each team is composed of students whose performance levels range from low to average to high, and (b) the average performance level of all the teams in the class is about equal (Slavin, 1995, p.75). This can be accomplished by listing the class in order from highest to lowest academic performer based on test scores, anecdotal records, teacher opinion, etc. The teacher can then attempt to distribute abilities as equally as possible throughout the teams.

instructions: Before beginning, the team members should choose a team name. The 4 member teams will work together, taking turns reading out loud and using the discussion questions distributed for chapters 5 and 6 to talk about the content of the book on day 3. The teacher will circulate and ask them to explain their answers to the questions. On day 4, the same teams will answer the worksheet questions reviewing content from chapters 1 - 6. They will read the questions aloud and write one answer agreed upon by the members of the group. After the worksheet is complete, the teacher will distribute a copy of the answers to each group to check their comprehension.

Tournaments (day 5)

objective: The learner will demonstrate comprehension of characters and plots in chapters 1 - 6 of The Lion,The Witch, and the Wardrobe based on their ability to correctly answer the questions provided.

group size: 3 students per ability-homogeneous team physical setting:

(Slavin, 1995, p.86)

assigning students to teams: Each of the members of the tournament group will be chosen from different teams. Using the tournament table assignment sheet (attached), assign the first 3 students on the list to table 1, the next three to table 2, and so on. In announcing table assignments to children, call them table blue, red, green, etc. in random order, so that students will not know exactly how tables are assigned (Slavin, 1995, p.86). The students should be listed on the sheet in order from top performer to bottom performer.

instructions: The students shuffle and draw from the numbered card deck to choose a starter. The person with the highest number reads first and play continues in a clockwise direction. To begin, player #1 draws from the top of the card deck and reads the corresponding question out loud. He/she then attempts to answer the question and may guess without being penalized. The person to the left of the answerer now has the option to challenge the answer. If he/she chooses not to (or passes), the next person has the option to challenge. When all three players have had a chance to answer, challenge, or pass, the person to the reader s right reads the answer from the answer sheet. If the challenger gives an incorrect answer, he/she must return a previously won card to the bottom of the deck (if any). Whoever provides the correct answer keeps the card for that question. This continues until all the questions provided have been answered. When the game is finished, the players count the number of cards they won. Within each tournament team, the person with the highest number of cards receives a score of 60, the second highest number of cards receives a score of 40 points, and the lowest number receives 20 points. These scores are then recorded on the game score sheet. The scores of each 4 person team will then be totaled and certificate awards (attached) or other previously agreed awards may be given. If the class chooses beforehand, the tournament scores may be saved and the games continued each week for a specified period of time. During this period, new scores will be added on to the total each week and at the end of the course of study, a winning team will be chosen. Also attached is a Team Summary Sheet for the members of the 4 person team to record their scores. The team with the highest total score at the end of the tournament(s) wins the Super Team Award, the second highest wins the Great Team award, and the third highest wins the Good Team award.
