EDP 621, Summer 2001

Dr Sherman

Concepts:

           Labor assembly lines         specialization

Objectives:

Students will be able to identify characteristics of the development of industrialization such as mass production, skilled labor, and trade.

Students will come to recognize the factors of team work, such as the need to stay focused, the need to tolerate each other and the fulfillment of completing a task.

Materials:

           1.  Supply of at least 100 sheets of paper, 8.5" X 11"

           2.  Pencils

           3.  Paper clips

           4.  String

Directions:

1.        What you will be doing is making an assembly line of paper air planes.  You will need string because there will be no throwing the airplanes around the room.   They will be attached to a line.

2.        Before class has started make up 15-20 phrases that each team needs to write on the planes.  Such as :

           a.  Plane 1  USA

                                  b.  Plane 2 the year

                                  c.  Plane 3 team name

                                  d.  Etc.  Your choices

3.        Separate the class into groups of 6.  And have them assign a person to each of the following positions:

                                             a.  Leader who tells the others what to do and what phrase to put on which plane

                      b.  Two people to fold the planes

                                             c.  One person to write on it what leader tells them to

                                             d.  One person to put clip on

                                             e.  One person to catch plane and tally

                                  4.        While they are doing this tie the strings from one end of the room to the other by using the backs and bottoms of chairs, one set for each group.  Make it at an angle, so the planes can slide down the string without much force.

           5.        Explain the rules and each persons job in the group.

           6.        Pass out the phrases to the leader only.

           7.        Tell them they have (choice) minutes to complete the task.  Don’t give them enough time to do all the planes.

           8.        Tally the scores based on directions and neatness of product.

Time:

One class period should do it.  Use your discretion as to how long each “round” will go.
