Welcome to PSY 685
Teaching Practicum
Fall 2008!

This course is meant to give you preparation in issues and research related to college-level teaching, as well as supervised practical experience in teaching psychology.

To submit the agenda posts, you must go to the on-line version of this course at http://blackboard.muohio.edu either directly or via www.mymiami.muohio.edu. Sign on using your Miami unique ID. The password is your MUnet / Novell password (the one you use to log into the network initially on campus, or when you dial into Miami's modem pool). To submit the agenda cards, click on the button that says "Discussion Board", then find the forum for the upcoming week. While you are there, check it out as a prepackaged instructional website. As a graduate instructor, you are eligible to have one of these set up for YOUR class!

Useful stuff for writing syllabi

·   Preparing to teach—a useful chapter from our textbook.

·   Ice Breakers for the First Day of Class

·   FAQs about University Policies, e.g., grades, incompletes, non-attendance, grievances.  See page 15, quick procedural reference guide.  DO be aware that this document is from the school of Education, so when they talk about divisional advisers, you should substitute 146 Upham, which is the College Arts & Sciences advising office.

·   In the Student Handbook, I specifically suggest you see the sections on dropping/withdrawing from a course, academic misconduct, and class attendance.

·   This presentation on Teaching Modules can help you think about structuring units of your course.

·   Project Syllabus.  Database holds over 150 peer-reviewed syllabi in 33 categories.

·   Please download the PSY statement on academic integrity.  We are expected to have this or something similar on our syllabi.

Those of you teaching research methods might find it useful to see the APA style checklist

NEW RESOURCE ON OTRP

--A Self-Scoring Exercise on APA Style and Research Language (2008) gives students the opportunity to act as editors by correcting errors in a mock discussion section. http://teachpsych.org/otrp/resources/resources.php?category=Research%20and%20Teaching

Diversity resources for teaching. The Task Force compiled annotated bibliographies of teaching resources, including books, book chapters, journal articles, films, websites, and other media. Topics include cross-cutting issues, such as assessment, institutional support for diversity education, instructional resources, power and privilege, and ways to encourage students from diverse backgrounds to pursue psychology as a profession. http://teachpsych.org/diversity/ptde/index.php
