There was a Child:  Coping with pregnancy loss

A documentary about coping with pregnancy loss by Fred Simon and Susan Walsh.

IMC Video RG560.T447-1991; 30 minutes

This video presents a documentary with three mothers who have lost a child through miscarriage or stillbirths.  The video is somewhat emotional and a disclaimer should be given at the beginning.  The video is meant to accompany a lecture on miscarriages and still-born babies.  The narrators also discuss the use of a DNC, which is a procedure used to remove a fetus that has died in the womb.  Each story is different, but it realistically portrays the phenomenon of losing a baby.  The video is very touching, but it is extremely important because this is a topic not easily discussed during lecture.  The video helps the students to understand the psychological pain associated with losing a baby.  The instructor should be sure to present a caution or some type of caveat about the nature of this film and its tendency to elicit strong emotional reactions.

Language development

28 min. 30 sec.

Adults, culture and society influence a child's language acquisition. As children learn to speak, they are also developing skills that enable them to learn reading and writing.  The video briefly discusses several rules for language development.  They provide a discussion on ways to cultivate language development and strategies that parents and other caretakers can implement for the success of language development.  The video focuses more on culture and the development of language in children with another culture, whose primary language is non-English.

Nourishing Language Development in Early Childhood

IMC LB1139.L3N68-1996; 27 minutes

This video is meant to compliment the sections on language development in the early childhood and infancy stages.  The video discusses the acquisition of language development in infants and early childhood.  It discusses concepts such as morphology, phonology, syntactics, semantics, and pragmatics.  The narrator also discusses how parents can cultivate and enhance their children’s language development.  This is a fantastic video that helps the students to understand language development as it occurs in young children.  The video helps to apply the various concepts of this topic, and helps the students to see its development in the children.

Sensory Play:  Constructing Realities

This video provides a supplement to Piaget’s theory of cognitive development and the understanding of play in infants.  The video presents infants in play as they explore their world for pure pleasure and curiosity.  Through vivid scenes of play, the video discusses how infants use objects in their surroundings to satisfy their inquisitive drive for using their sensory and motor skills to learn and explore.  The video also explains how infants progress to the next stage of cognitive development and how their play becomes more advanced and meaningful.

The Developing Child-Middle Childhood:  Cognitive and Language Development

IMC Video:  HQ767.9D481; 29 minutes

This video explores cognitive development using Piaget’s theory and focusing on the concrete operational stage.  It also contrasts Piaget’s theory with the Information Processing approach to cognitive development. The video presents a nice supplement to chapter 9, as it devotes at least 17 minutes to these two cognitive developmental theories.  There is also an inclusion of language development in school-age children, with some cultural considerations.  The video discusses bilingualism and its implications for future development and school functioning.  Thus, the role of the school and parents are discussed briefly, as related to increasing children’s cognitive development.  The video discusses the use of intelligence tests and achievement tests to evaluate a child’s cognitive abilities and academic school functioning.  There is some mention of interventions as they discuss the concepts of mainstreaming and least restrictive environments (LRE).

Rainbows of Intelligence; Raising student performance through multiple intelligences

IMC Video:  LB1060T452-2000; 32 minutes

This video uses classroom illustrations to highlight multiple intelligences as a powerful way of improving instruction and student learning as well as meeting higher standards.  The video helps students to see how teachers can use this in their teaching strategies as well as how different student benefit from different teaching approaches.

Understanding childhood trauma. Trauma and healing

29 min.

Explains how adults who suffered trauma in their childhood often have difficulty expressing anger. Uses stories of three recovering trauma victims to address the steps toward recovery.  This video could be used to supplement a lecture on child maltreatment and forms of abuse.  It helps the students to see the continuous effects of trauma in childhood.  The students are able to examine positive and negative outcomes/consequences of childhood abuse, as the child grows into adulthood.

Middle adulthood. Intimate relationships and the sandwich generation

28 min., 30 sec.

This video examines intimate relationships and how individuals adapt and change in middle adulthood. It includes a discussion of gender convergence, and an overview of issues that middle adults confront such as when they must continue to care for their children while assuming greater responsibility for their aging parents

Early adulthood. Special problems

28 min., 20 sec.

This video covers areas of special concern in young adults such as eating disorders, substance abuse, and death due to violence and risky behavior.  It is a good transition from adolescence into early adulthood if using a chronological approach to development.

Attention deficit disorder

 25 min

The video discusses diagnosis and treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, which affects both adults and children.  Thus, the video includes depictions of children and adults affected by the disorder.  A brief overview of treatment is also presented with some emphasis on common psychotropic medication.

Preschoolers: physical and cognitive development

28 min.

The video discusses fine & gross motor skills, eye-hand and hand-mouth coordination, and cognitive development of 3 and 4 year olds.   The video presents the preoperational child with improved motor control and coordination.  During activities, the narrator indicates how children are making sense of their world through the use of symbolic, mental representations and the language abilities.  The video illustrates that children use two primary questions to guide their actions and evaluations:  "What does it do?" and "What can I do with it?"

Middle adulthood. Midlife crisis?

28 min., 30 sec.

Examines "midlife crisis."  The video discusses who experiences it, circumstances that may initiate it, and the role that it plays in the lives of individual men and women. It presents opposing theories as to whether the concept of midlife crisis is valid and how theories relate to this controversial issue.

Steel Magnolias - 1989

15 minutes

The entire video (120 minutes) explores a story of life, love, and loss with six women.  When the youngest woman dies as a result of childbirth, the five women left experience love and grief as they cope with this loss.  The clip to be shown includes the funeral and moments thereafter when the ladies come together to help their friend (mother of the deceased) to grieve.  This clip is near the end of the video.  The video clip is expected to help students realize the impact of death and bring their attention to the topic of the grief.  The video is perfect to compliment a lecture on death and dying.

About A Boy – 2002

This video tells the story of two males, one attempting to maintain his youth, while the other being forced into a nurturing, caretaker role fit for an older person.  The video has several scenes pertinent to development.  Two most relevant scenes would be “The Weird Kid” and “Marcus in the Middle”.  The first scene, “The Weird Kid” is that of the 12-year old being escorted to school by his mother who displays affection for him in the presence of other students.  The boy is embarrassed but conflicted between his loyalties to his mother and his desire to fit in with the other students.  The second scene, “Marcus in the Middle” presents the two adults (the male and the mother) as the mother confronts the male about his visits and relationship with her son.  This scene is important because it indicates that the mother is overwhelmed with her own problems and has lost sight of her son’s needs.  This video would compliment a lecture on middle childhood and children’s needs to separate from the family and join with friends.  It would also compliment a lecture on parenting children in middle childhood.  Thirdly, this video might also provide a supplement to depression and its effects on parenting.

Judging Amy

2002 – Rebecca’s new-found religion

There was an episode in Fall 2002, which focused somewhat on religion and included children’s beliefs.  In this episode, Rebecca (approximately 10 years old) visits her aunt’s protestant church and is amazed by the difference from her catholic church.  She enjoys this experience and is inspired by her aunt and the spirit in this church.  Rebecca comes home to her father and begins to enact the Protestant religious rituals during her bedtime prayer.  Her father is amazed and very upset by this.  Rebecca explains that this is how prayer is conducted at her aunt’s church and she is obviously very excited about this newfound approach to religion.  The scene illustrates the developmental processes of spirituality and religion.  Rebecca is actually enthused by the Protestant church because of its novelty, because she had “fun” during the services, and also because she admires and looks up to her aunt dearly.  This leads into a discussion on the developmental processes of religion and how children, adolescents, and adults interpret and understand religion.

2003 - Lauren’s sleepover - The cruelty of girls and friendships

This episode of Judging Amy illustrates how girls engage in somewhat aggressive, and cruel behaviors with other girls.  Lauren (approximately age 12) has a sleep over with her other friends.  The girls have an exclusive friendship and they are not very accepting of others who do not measure up to their standards.  Lauren is at a new school and trying to make friends, so she has this party so that this group will think she is as cool as they are.  Unfortunately, another girl is ostracized and the exclusive girls and made to feel that she does not measure up to standard.  The video shows how cruel these girls are, and their perceptions of being ‘the cool girls’.  It also includes intervention from an adult (Amy) in an attempt to resolve the problem.

Everwood

2003- From Boy to Man - The transition from adolescence to adulthood

This episode is focused on adolescents making the transition to early adulthood.  The particular scene most relevant to this topic is of Dr. Brown speaking to a Native American father about the dangers of a ritual and its purpose in signifying the son and father’s growth.  Although the rite of passage for this Native American adolescent is very dangerous to his health, his father has to allow it to happen.  The father explains to Dr. Brown that this transition is as much a transition for him (as a father) as it is for his son.  The video illustrates the need for parents to allow and encourage development in their children.

I Am Sam; The Other Sister; Rainman

Each of these videos is specific to individuals with a developmental disorder, mental retardation.  Both I am Sam and The Other Sister have specific scenes with the individual discussing (exclaiming) his/her experience of the disability and limitations for living an average lifestyle.  These are video clips to supplement a lecture on developmental disabilities, intellectual/cognitive development, or a lecture specific to mental retardation.
