2001-02 APA PFF Scholars & Activities

A key feature of PFF programs is partnership with non-doctoral institutions so that grad students learn how faculty roles are affected by institutional context.

·         Sandy Neumann has been shadowing Nelson Bingham at Earlham, and has guest lectured for Shannon Maxwell at MU-H.

·         Andrea Bakker and Marie Weakland are teaching Social Psychology at NKU, mentored by Doug Krull.

·         Patty Mills has taught intro psych and child development at MSJ.

·         Zak Birchmeier has visited MSJ and NKU, and intends to do statistical consulting for MU-M and teach at MSJ with Jim Bodle.

·         LaTasha McKenzie Mack has visited Earlham and MSJ, and is teaching Child and Adolescent Development at MSJ with the mentorship of Jim Bodle.

·         Amberly Panepinto taught Intro Psych with Jim Bodle last summer at MSJ, and has visited NKU, MSJ and Earlham Colleges for guest lectures and panels about grad school.

Interactions with Partner Faculty

Thanks to our partners for their hospitality in the early fall, when Cecilia Shore made visits to each of the partners to extend our thanks for their participation and seek input about the program.

November 1, Miami welcomed our partner faculty: Jim Bodle and Tim Lawson of MSJ, Jeff Smith of NKU, Vince Punzo of Earlham, Shannon Maxwell of MU-Hamilton and Beth Uhler, MU-Middletown.  We talked about “what faculty members wish they had known about faculty roles” and mutual expectations for placements on partner campuses.

Professional development series

Dr. Leonard Mark, winner of the Jahnke-White Departmental Service Award, gave an informal presentation on “The role of service in the life work of a faculty member.”

We were also delighted to welcome three distinguished visitors during Fall 2001.  James H. Korn, St. Louis University, presented a workshop on mentoring, an informal talk on the use of deception in psychology research, and a colloquium on “Learning to Teach Psychology.”  Barney Beins, Ithaca College, talked with faculty and students about national standards for curricula in psychology, and presented a colloquium on “Taming the Hydra: Coherence in the Psychology Curriculum.”    Both Drs. Korn and Beins completed their undergraduate work at Miami and have gone on to significant service in the Society for Teaching of Psychology.  In addition, Jack Meacham, SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor and Department Chair, gave an informal talk on redesigning a developmental psychology course to include diverse student narratives, and a colloquium on diversity in higher education.

Tim Lawson at MSJ  hosted  a session Feb. 12 on “Technology & Teaching.”  He, with  Beth Uhler and Cathy Bishop-Clark MU-M), helped us consider pros and cons of computer-mediated communication, wireless technology, and the internet in educational settings.

APA- PFF scholars at teaching conferences

Members of the APA PFF group gave two presentations at teaching conferences this fall.  LaTasha McKenzie Mack, Patty Mills, Amberly Reid, Marie Weakland and Cecilia Shore presented a panel on “Preparing Doctoral Students for Faculty Roles” at Mid America Conference on Teaching of Psychology (Evansville, October).

Also, at the Lilly Conference on College Teaching (Oxford, November), Cecilia Shore, Shannon Maxwell, Zachary Birchmeier, Erin Cressy, Beth Harrick, Patricia Mills, and Sandra Neumann presented “Preparing Graduate Students For Faculty Roles.”

APA-PFF Scholar attends AAC&U  meetings

The American Association of Colleges and Universities, one of the PFF sponsoring organizations, invited grad students from PFF programs to attend their meetings in January in Washington. This year’s theme was: Changing Students in a Changing World: Culturally Diverse, Economically Divided, Globally Interdependent.  Sandra Neumann reports:

“This was THE most exciting conference I have EVER attended! As a representative of Miami University’s Preparing Future Faculty program, my days spent in DC were filled with talking with a variety of other PFFers, engaging in candid conversations with Rosemary Phelps of the UGA Psychology cluster (my conference mentor), and learning about everything from sustainable campuses to campus coalitions for change. I also fit in a tour of the APA headquarters (thanks to Joan Freund) and some time wandering around the Capitol Mall. Perhaps the most notable experience I had throughout the entire conference was that, once I identified myself as a PFFer, people took note. I was treated as a peer in almost every context. It was obvious to me now that Preparing Future Faculty is making a profound difference in the professional development (and career opportunities) of graduate students.  A sincere “thank you” to Miami and the APA for providing me with the funds to attend this conference.”

Tri-State APA PFF Psychology Symposium

The Second Annual Tri-State Symposium was held Jan. 25, 2002.  Some partner undergrads arrived early for lab tours.  There were 8 posters, representing the work of 13 undergrad authors.   We are especially pleased to note that one of these,  “Effect of Age and Type of Illness on the Decision to Continue Life Support”  Loretta LaRosa, MSJ, is a winner of a Psi Chi Regional Research Award at MPA!

In breakout sessions, partner undergrads met with Miami grad students and doctoral faculty about graduate programs.  Partner faculty (Tim Lawson of MSJ and Michael Jackson of Earlham)  talked with doctoral faculty about teaching issues, and with grad students about “Wearing more than one hat—Integrating teaching and scholarship.”
