APA PFF Scholars 2006-07

The 2006-07 APA PFF scholars were Matthew Allen and April Dye.   Matt is a clinical student who taught on Hamilton campus this year.  April is in social psychology and taught on Oxford campus.

Matt says: … as the year comes to a close I can say without hesitation that my conversations with Susan Hahn and also Trish Ellerson helped make the experience a growth-enhancing one for me on several levels.  ….  In terms of my development as a teacher, I think that the Miami Hamilton students taught me a lot about my professional identity.  Put simply, I often found that the Miami Hamilton students broke my heart.  [individual students and their struggles are described] I spoke to both Susan and Trish about this issue, and was comforted to know that it is something that they struggle with as well.  Over the course of the year I developed an intense respect for the work … that faculty …do in such environments…

April says:   I really enjoyed the chance to have a mentor at a college, Earlham College in particular, which fit the profile of the type of institution I could see myself working at in the future.  This opportunity let me see first hand what faculty life is like at a small, liberal arts college, as well as what the students were like in the classroom setting.  I was given the opportunity at Earlham to help teach a course unlike any that I have gotten to experience at Miami, as well as act as a source of information for students who are interested in pursuing graduate studies.  …Overall, my experience as a PFF scholar has bolstered my self-confidence in teaching, as well as made me excited and certain that teaching at a small, liberal arts college is in fact the career I plan on engaging myself in after finishing my graduate studies.

APA PFF scholars 2005-06

APA PFF scholars Lori Koelsch and Carrie Hall presented two panels at the 13th Midwestern Institute for Students and Teachers of Psychology at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn IL.: "Survivor! The Grad school challenge!" and
"Integrating research methods into content courses"

Lori reflected:All in all, I am grateful for the PFF program and happy that I partook in it.  …I was able to accomplish my goal of finding out what it was like at a small liberal arts college.  Although I assume that not all are like Earlham, I had a real sense of how it was different from a school like Miami, both in student population and faculty expectations.  I found that I can imagine myself working in this type of setting, and hope that working with PFF has helped me towards this goal.”   Thanks to Michael Jackson, her mentor at Earlham.

Carrie says: …. In particular, going to MISTOP really opened my eyes to just how many educators really are focused on teaching and the innovative ways in which they are reaching students. Also, the discussions our group held about issues in teaching really helped me to define my approach to teaching and the relationship I want to have with my students. I really value the experiences I had while participating in the Preparing Future faculty program this year. These experiences definitely have helped shape my professional development.
