Welcome to |
My research is on cognitive and language development in toddlers and preschoolers. My early research focused on children's discovery of symbols in language and play, the linkages between developments in these domains, and individual differences in these abilities. Some of my work has explored parents' support of children's language and symbolic play development. Much of children's early language and play is embedded in their understanding of events. Another thread of research involves children's understanding of causality. We have begun to study children's understanding of the relationship between intentions and desires, that is, mental representations of means and ends. Some research investigates whether children understand that the causal principles that apply to the real world may be different from those that apply in imagination or fiction. This research is related to other "theory of mind" developments, such as understanding pretense and dreaming. You can email me at shorec at muohio.edu.
