I’ve been interested in teaching mathematics since I was in tenth grade at East Brady Area High School, in East Brady, PA. So off I went to undergraduate school at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, in Indiana, PA to become a high school math teacher. While there, I became interested in teaching at the college level and received the very good advice to go and get a Ph.D. degree. After receiving my doctorate from the University of Illinois, in Urbana, IL, where I taught as a graduate student, I taught two years at Lake Forest College, in Lake Forest, IL, and then moved to Oxford, OH and Miami University. As I suspect most folks do, I became interested in mathematical research while I was a graduate student. My research field is functional analysis, more specifically, Banach space theory. My adviser at Illinois was M.M. Day. I was extremely (pun intended) fortunate to have him as my adviser, and I have J.J. "Jerry" Uhl, Jr. to thank (which I do) for suggesting that I ask Professor Day to be my adviser.
