Census data used in the GIS
In creating the GIS, I have used the
censes of 1871, 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1925 and 1933 conducted by the
Imperial Statistical Office. When the results of the censes were
published in the Statistisches Jahrbuch für das Deutsche Reich data was aggregated at the Kreis level. I have relied on special publications such the Gemeindelexikon for data on each Stadtbezirk (city) and Landgemeinde (village). As explained in Building the GIS, occaisionally electors from two or more Landgemeinden
voted together in the same voting place. When that has occured, I have
aggregated the census data of the polling place and made note of it in
my dataset in the column "OTHER_PLACES".The censes conducted by the Oldenburg statistical office are of another magnitude entirely, being much more detailed, especially where agricultural data were concerned. I have currently inputed those from 1910 and 1925, and hope to add more when funding allows.
I have also used the Prussian agricultural censes of 1882, 1895, and 1907, as well as the occupational censes of 1882, 1898, and 1907. As with the Oldenburg data, I am seeking funding to add more robust data from the 1920s.
