Founded in 1703 at the mouth of the Neva River, St. Petersburg was the pride of Peter the Great's modern Russia. The Fortress of Peter and Paul protected the collection of settlements from invasion by the Swedes. Once these threats were repressed, St. Petersburg grew to become a major commercial center and gateway to the Baltic, and thus to Europe. The illustration to the left is an early view of the wooden fortress. |
