Portrait of Trotsky
Trotsky was an important Bolshevik leader. In 1918 he became commissar of war and organized the Red Army. The Bolsheviks managed to win the civil war which followed the revolution largely due to Trotsky's organizational abilities. Later his opposition to Stalin's policies led to his exile and eventual assassination.
This is a series of modernist sketches of Bolshevik politicians by Yurii Annenkov (1889-1974). Annenkov was known for his geometric art and for his portraits of cultural and political figures. In the 1910's and 1920's he illustrated books and popular magazines. He also worked as a stage and film set designer, as well as a designer for numerous celebrations and pagents commemorating the Revolution of 1917. In 1924 he moved to Paris and continued to design stage and film sets, and to exhibit widely.
